Sarracenia rubra ssp. jonesii, known as the Mountain Sweet Pitcher Plant, is an exceptionally rare and elegant subspecies native only to mountain bogs in North and South Carolina. It is significantly larger and more robust than the common ssp. rubra, with stately pitchers that can reach heights of up to 75 cm tall. This subspecies is most famous for its solitary maroon flowers that release a potent, sweet fragrance reminiscent of violets in early spring.
As a federally listed Endangered species, this plant is a crown jewel for any serious collection. Its slender pitchers are characterized by a unique "bulge" near the top and intricate maroon-purple veining that intensifies under strong light. These plants are naturally hardy and well-adapted to cooler mountain environments, making them a resilient choice for Canadian growers.
