The fastest trap in the plant kingdom

This genus has the fastest trap in the plant kingdom. Hidden in the soil, hundreds of tiny bladders build up suction, then spring open and pull in prey in under a millisecond, faster than the human eye can see. Above the surface the plants form dense carpets of minute leaves topped with orchid-like flowers in white, pink, violet, yellow or red. Many species bloom on a windowsill for months at a time, which makes them some of the most rewarding plants you can grow.

Growing Bladderworts (Utricularia)

Read the full care guide →

Light

A wide range works, from full sun to fairly bright shade: a bright windowsill or a grow light on a 12 to 14 hour cycle. Bright light leads to noticeably more flowers.

Water

Rainwater, distilled or RO water. Stand the pot in a tray of water, a couple of centimetres deep or up to about 1/4 of the way up the pot, and top it up as it evaporates.

Dormancy

None needed. Bladderworts grow year round indoors.
