Australian Pitcher Plants (Cephalotus)
One of the most peculiar and desired carnivorous plants in cultivation. Cephalotus develop intricate pitchers with hairy bristles that guide insects towards their open mouth. Nectar glands lure insects towards a ridge of shape, incurved teeth. A transparent window allows light to shine into the pitcher cavity making the depths of the traps more inviting to insects. Unique among pitcher plants, Cephalotus has a bright white ridge that overhangs its pool of digestive juices. This ridge is slippery and baited with nectar. Often unsuspecting insects will hang off the downward facing teeth to reach this nectar causing them to tumble in. Once inside the overhanging white ridge prevents escape and the insect is dissolved and digested.
