Vriesea fosteriana 'Red Chestnut'
Vriesea fosteriana 'Red Chestnut' is a striking bromeliad with broad, arching leaves around a deep, rich red centre that intensifies in bright light. Its thick, glossy leaves carry creamy geometric bands and turn red-maroon with age, and mature rosettes reach about 60 cm across, one of the most beautifully marked Vriesea. Tall flower spikes rise from the centre for extra drama. A bold focal point for any bright indoor display.
How to keep it happy
Bright, indirect light from an east or south window, without harsh midday sun. Stiffer, colourful-leaved types take more light than soft green-leaved types.
Keep the central cup filled, flushing it with fresh water weekly to every couple of weeks to prevent rot. Keep the potting media lightly moist, never soggy.
A chunky, fast-draining orchid-bark mix rather than a peat-heavy houseplant soil.
These aren't carnivorous, so normal fertilizing applies. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer lightly on the mix or leaves, and ease off in winter.
None needed. Bromeliads grow year round.
